Wait! Can we do something to build good relationships in the workspace?
Why don’t we discuss some essential skills.
Effective ways to maintain good relationships in your workspace
There are a bunch of reasons why we are unable to maintain good relationships with everyone around us. A few can be due to ego, and a few can be due to competition. It is not confined to only both of these. You need to know that there are ways you can maintain good relationships, and which can be discussed with your necessary ones too.
1. Share credit with others whenever necessary
Whenever applicable for whatever work you have done, there is nothing that can be achieved with teamwork. sharing credit with your co-workers is a sure sign that you will be able to work well with others. All those individuals will like you even more than they did before and might probably gain a higher level of respect as well.
On the other hand, if you don’t share credit when credit is due, you’ll gain a reputation as someone who is selfish about their own hardships and can forget others when they've used them entirely. You just can't be that way in any professional manner as it shows an unprofessional behavior that can irritate your co-workers. In reality, the truth usually prevails, and you won’t get ahead - you may just not find yourself on the other side of your achievements.
2. Be a person who takes responsibility for their own actions
It’s always important as it showcases a professional behavior to take responsibility for things that you do, especially when something goes wrong from your side. No one in this world is perfect even if you think about it in your mind. Very few people realize that if they really understand the importance of perfection. What really an unprofessional behavior looks like is when you make a mistake and blame others for your fault.
Not only are you not telling the truth, but you’re also giving the impression that you shouldn't be taken responsible for this situation which creates a bad impression in your co-worker’s mind. Instead, if you start taking responsibility for all the faulty actions, you’ll probably notice two things.
Firstly, your co-workers will likely be willing to help you correct the problem and help you to succeed in whatever projects you have taken. Secondly, as they have seen you taking responsibility on your head protecting them sometimes, they will be more comfortable around you, knowing that you are honest and will never place the blame on someone else.
3. Honor your assigned work
Always try to take enough time to complete the assigned projects in a timely manner, even when something unexpected comes up in your schedule. It's necessary to give yourself more time than necessary to finish whenever you’re working on rather than to anything else that is not that worthy enough. This way, you will have points for not disappointing your colleagues.
If you still need more time, go the extra mile, but try to accomplish the task at a given point in time. This will not only strengthen your workplace relationships but will also provide you with important feedback on where you were stuck and how much time you need to assign to that work if it comes the next time.
4. Stop fidgeting with your phone
We all have so many incoming messages from a lot of people. Out of those hardly 10% can be considered as important ones and 90% full of time. We tend to incline towards those 90% rather those that are really important to us. You need to stop using your phone whenever you are meeting or in any conference calls. It might lead to bad distractions and can also create bad relationships with your co-workers.
The best thing you can do is, just switch it off whenever necessary. Unless you need your phone for actual work, turn it off or put it away. But when you play with it, it showcases that your phone is more important than your job. Make a habit of checking your messages or making quick calls during your breaks or leisure or only after you complete your entire work.
5. Smile quite often even if you don't like it
The act of smiling is considered to be one of the best things to build relationships amongst your unknown co-workers. It also shows a pretty good gesture to them. According to Scientific facts, the individuals who smile often are not only happier, but they’re also more successful in life and their work as well. You know the best part - It doesn’t cost you a penny.
It’s free of cost and when you do the same you will watch the world (or at least the people you work with) smile right back at you. It could also be that you might be facing issues and might be frustrated as well. But did you happen to notice a difference between when you smile and ask for help with respect to when you ask for help in a rude manner? Everything changes in a fraction of a second, and so here the response from people would be the same.
When you do the latter people will not help you even if they have free time and when you have a former approach people will be ready to help even if their plate is full. So, just smile and see how things change and how relationships build faster than you ever thought of. You need to know how to start your day with a smile, it is after that you would lead a happy life.
Apart from the above-mentioned skills there can be something that you might find more useful as well. Remember, a mutual understanding between workers creates a healthy environment of co-operation between members of the team and also the organization. If you respect the people for the way they are for the way they work, it's much easier to work with them to accomplish your projects, rather than always getting bullied. So, start building a mutual bond and understand what else can be brought up to give yourself an environment that you have never imagined about.
